Reviewing DataCamp: Is It Worth The Cost?

 January 2, 2021

By  DSSC Team

As big data grows in popularity and revenue potential, so the need for people with a proper understanding of it. Projected to be a hundred-billion dollar by the end of the 2020s, big data has amazing things to teach, many of which we haven’t begun to consider.

If you want to get into big data, you need to find the right course. It should be one that gives a proper survey of this area. A great place to learn big data is on DataCamp.

Lots of renowned companies have used DataCamp to help them understand big data. These courses aren’t going to turn you into a big data expert in an instance, but they provide the tools to do so.

All About DataCamp

Martijn Theuwissen, Dieter De Mesmaeker, and Jonathan Cornelissen, data scientists from Belgium, started this company in 2014. Its classes are hosted online, meaning you don’t have to install any software or application.

Who Runs DataCamp?

Founding member Martijn Theuwissen is also the CEO of DataCamp Inc.

Don't Confuse The Two

Coincidentally, there are two companies called DataCamp. However, the other one, DataCamp Limited, has nothing to do with this company, which we’ll be focusing on in this review.

What is the XP version

To help students stayed encouraged and get through their courses, this platform offers DataCamp XP. Students accumulate points as they follow their learning paths. These are points aren’t valid as payment, however.

How Popular is DataCamp?

It has received a lot of love from people in the industry. However, it’s still not at the point of universal recognition in the data world. Completing this course is a great accomplishment, but it doesn’t provide college credit, for instance.

What’s the Overall Concept?

DataCamp’s concept is giving coding lessons for both businesses and students. Those with both prior and no experience in data can use these courses. The main languages taught are Python, R, and SQL>

This is what new users need to do:

 1. Complete the beginning assessment

 2. Pick the language to learn

 3. Test skills

 4. Begin the class

 5. Complete class

 6. Finish more DataCamp courses and other things offered

Complete the beginning assessment

This survey helps you find out what you like. It could also help you decide which programming language you should go for.

Pick the language to learn

Knowing the right programming language for you and your business is an essential part of using this platform. Though it might seem like they’re all pretty similar, there are definite distinctions.

R is best for people who work in stats. The most significant share of DataCamp classes involve R. Meanwhile, Python is better if you don’t have a specific goal in mind.

Go with Python if you’re starting out. Not only is it far-less restricting than R, but it’s also more intuitive.

However, if you’re set on a big data career, go for R. Getting situated can be a little challenging, but you can figure it out and excel if you’re committed.

Test skills

You don’t need to do this part if you’re a total novice. There are complementary courses for each of the three languages. Please, don’t go any further without taking these because you’re going to be deeply confused and likely frustrated if you jump into a class that you’re not ready for.

Don’t just jump into them if you have the experience, either. First, you need to test your skills. After you finish, DataCamp will be able to determine which classes would be right for you.

Begin Class

There are two options for taking classes. You can take a single course, or you can take a Track. The two tracks offered are Skill and Career.

The skills test will help DataCamp recommend which path you should take.

Keep things simple if you’re a newcomer. The intro classes are made for beginners and can help you feel more comfortable with this complicated study.

You’ll need to follow along and keep up with lessons and assignments. However, if you can do that, the courses are yours to conquer.

Complete Class

DataCamp isn’t all that intimidating, especially not if you’ve developed useful study skills.

You’ll also get a very hands-on learning experience. Classes involve working with code directly. This helps to make these concepts more tangible, illustrating how much can happen when you understand programming.

There can be the urge to blast through these courses, trying to become a master coder in less than a week. The enthusiasm is admirable, but going too hard at once isn’t the way to go. Stay steady with your classes, but don’t push yourself to the extreme.

Finish more DataCamp classes and other things offered

Once the first class is finished, pat yourself on the back. This is a significant achievement, one that’s taught you things that will make you an asset to many employers.

Don’t think the journey ends there, however. Big data is a big field, and if you want to make it your livelihood, you need to learn everything you possibly can about it. Other classes are waiting for you to complete them.

We’ve told you about how this platform works. Now, how about the pricing?

What’s DataCamp Pricing?

There are two payment options available for students, both available via subscription. There’s Basic, which is $25/month and offers 44 classes and two career tracks. There’s also Premium, which lets you access every course, track, and other material.

Can I Get a Discount?

Once in a while, there’ll be multiple bargains for online classes. A consistent discount is giving 50 percent off for successfully completing the starting lesson for a free class. This is an excellent incentive for focusing on this lesson.

Can I Get a Free Trial?

There isn’t any free version promoted by the company. That said, there are two and three-month free trials available. These are offered due to collaborations between Github and Microsoft.

Be advised: while anyone can take advantage of the Microsoft trials, Github is only available for students.

What are the tracks I can take?

Tracks go further than the individual classes, and they can give you a lot more knowledge and confidence with different skills. You’ll receive a certificate upon completion, which can show employers your proficiency in a given area of data.

Now, we’re going to look at the two Track types: Skill and Career

Skill Tracks

These tracks involve learning coding through direct action. Other online learning platforms emphasize this kind of learning. This platform does it better than most, though. Its editor is great to use.

You’ll have more than 40 Skill Tracks to choose from. These are sorted based on language. You should be able to narrow down your options after some consideration.

You can finish a Skills Track in about a month, depending on how much time you have available. Most of them have at least four and at most seven classes. Each lesson builds off the one before it, helping you get closer to being a big data big-timer.

Skill Tracks are about giving you specialties. It’s too vague to say you’re a “data expert.” This can make you feel a lot more confident, as not all data experts will be able to do what you can.

On the first day of a Skill Track, you might feel like you’re in over your head. After all, if this doesn’t make sense to you now, why would it make sense after a few weeks?

However, everything you’ve ever learned has been confusing at first. There was a time when you had to think hard about which letter came next in the alphabet.

The more time you spend with something, the more you can understand it. Devote yourself to your Skills Track and prepare to be amazed by how much you’ve learned and can do when it’s over.

Career Tracks

If you think Skill Tracks are demanding, get ready for Career Tracks. These don’t last or cost as much as options given by similar sites, but they arguably ask for more from their students.

Career Tracks are more selective on their platform. The three previously mentioned courses are all there, but only 14 Tracks are offered. Within the Tracks are a maximum of 30 classes. These should take at least a few months to finish.

Career Track classes are so intense because they’re meant to help you to become a perfect candidate for many data careers. Do they do this?

Although they can’t guarantee employment, the Career Tracks are a fantastic way to learn data. Signing up for Premium gives you access to all of these classes and the great people teaching them. You can learn at the hands of data scientists with jaw-dropping resumés.

There are other great places to learn data science. But they’re more expensive and take longer typically. While DataCamp certainly takes time, it isn’t so consuming.

The $30 monthly cost is also a lot more attractive than the thousand-dollar expenses of just one class for other platforms.

If you find out, after a month, that you and DataCamp don’t click, it’s all good. You’ll have spent $30 on learning a new skill. Ideally, you’ll love it and become a regular user, gaining more expertise the further you go.

This platform is definitely one of the top choices for understanding data. The things we loved the most include:

 - Lots of classes in their catalog

 - Goes over the programming languages most commonly used in data

 - Beneficial projects

 - Excellent teaching staff

 - Great editor for learning code

 - Easy to adapt to

 - Don’t need internet connection for lessons

 - Mobile app available

Although there’s a lot to like about DataCamp, we do have some issues with it. We wanted to tell you about them now so that you’re fully aware of your purchase.

 - Doesn’t have a lot of options for free members

 - Course material can seem relatively easy to experienced data professionals

 - Over-abundance of pre-made code

How effective is DataCamp?

If you’re wanting to learn data science and don’t have any experience with it, it does the job. This isn’t the best pick if you’re already involved in data science and want to go further in the field.

Is DataCamp good for learning Python?

It's definitely an excellent place for Python learners. It uses interactive exercises to guide you through this widespread programming language. However, you should know that learning Python mainly means learning it for data purposes.

Is DataCamp good for learning R?

R can also be learned here. Since it’s the most prolific language amongst the platform’s courses, it’s especially worth learning. You’ll also have the benefit of learning from some true geniuses on the matter.

Is DataCamp good for learning SQL?

While we haven’t had the chance to talk about SQL in-depth, it’s another language to learn. The only downside is that there aren’t quite as many classes for it as there are for Python or R. Nonetheless, it’s still a great language to learn, which is still a great place to learn it.

Can I Get a Job Via DataCamp?

When you finish your courses and track, you won’t be suddenly called to start a new company. However, if you’re looking to convince hiring managers that you’re the right person for the data job, these courses are very useful.

Don’t stop at putting your credentials on your resumé. Look for businesses that appeal to you and go over data figures pertaining to their field. Turn your research into a report, showing them what you’ve learned and how your knowledge could help them.

How To Get A DataCamp Certificate?

DataCamp has certificates, which are granted due to finishing a class successfully. You can download this and share it, showing proof of completion.

Are DataCamp Certificates Worth It?

Although these certificates are good confidence boosts, the point of taking these classes shouldn’t be to get a certificate. If you’re too focused on the certificates, you’re likely to lose track of the main point: becoming well-rounded in different data topics.

Final Thoughts: So Is It Worthwhile?

DataCamp is an excellent option for anyone who wants to learn data science the right way. Anyone who’s curious but cautious about the subject should sign up for it. This platform gives you the power to understand data and gives you plenty of new skills.

Although there are some downsides, DataCamp has far more good than bad. The editor is fantastic, even if it’d be better if it let the student write more. This is also an easy site to use, encouraging further visits.

You can excel in data science with DataCamp. Check out their courses and Tracks today, and get ready to learn all kinds of great and essential new skills.
